Welcome to the blog of Johnathan Grieve.
I am the proprietor of Avondale wine estate, and pioneer of the BioLOGIC® approach to sustainable viticulture. The transformation of Avondale from over-used and abused land into a thriving, robust vineyard ecosystem has been a personal learning journey of more than a decade long. This blog is where I share some of what I have learnt about promoting life on our farm and the wonderful impact this has had on our handcrafted premium quality wines.

A Warm Autumn Pair – La Luna and Osso Bucco
The evening chill has arrived, bringing a sharp end to Summer’s outdoor sprawl and turning us towards the cosier, comfort of indoors. If you are starting to feel that yen for crackling fireplaces, smooth red wine and heartier food, here is a warm pairing of Avondale’s La Luna and a traditional Osso Bucco that is perfect for an Autumn night.
7 Good Reasons Why Avondale Chooses FSC Corks
With the launch of our Magnificent Collection, Avondale has opted for Amorim natural corks that are certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC). Natural cork is a truly sustainable product that is without doubt the most environmentally-friendly sealing solution for any wine producer. Our 2010 White vintage, 2009 Red vintage and MCC will all be sealed with FSC-approved corks.
Autumn – Time to Replenish

Introducing Avondale’s Magnificent Collection
When my family acquired Avondale in 1997, we had a dream that one day we would make premium quality wines. My grandfather, founder of Vital Health Foods gave us the legacy of a holistic approach to life and a keen focus on balance and well-being.
Terra est Vita – Soil is Life
Life begins in the soil. At Avondale we are acutely aware that healthy balance in our vineyard eco-system, in our wines and in our own lives is dependent on first achieving healthy balance in oursoil. Chemically, biologically and physically the health of soil, water, plants, animals and humans areintricately inter-related.
Sweet Waters
A stream of natural, sweet water runs down the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein mountains through Avondale’s land. We are blessed to have pure quality water as the source of life in our vineyards and to use in the making of our extraordinary wines. High up on the farm, a natural stone weir diverts the spring waters into a system of seven dams situated on the slopes.
The Vineyard Ecosystem
Vineyards are monocultures which are fundamentally unnatural, unbalanced environments that Nature strives constantly to correct. In conventional farming, the vineyard becomes the battlefield where a damaging war is continuously waged between the farmer and life.
