Welcome to the blog of Johnathan Grieve.
I am the proprietor of Avondale wine estate, and pioneer of the BioLOGIC® approach to sustainable viticulture. The transformation of Avondale from over-used and abused land into a thriving, robust vineyard ecosystem has been a personal learning journey of more than a decade long. This blog is where I share some of what I have learnt about promoting life on our farm and the wonderful impact this has had on our handcrafted premium quality wines.

Biodiversity throughout the system
he measure of the robustness of any ecosystem can be found in its biodiversity. Multitudes of life forms reduce vulnerability, protect the ecosystem from shocks and enable it to restore and regenerate more quickly. Avondale was one of the first South African wine producers to be awarded the Biodiversity in Wine certification.
Interacting with Nature’s feedback loops
The web of life is intricately connected by dynamic feedback loops. Silent to our ears and out of sight, these are much harder for humans to discern, understand and engage with.
The Family Man
Avondale is a family farm and all the work we have done to restore and promote life on the land has been undertaken with our future generations in mind.
The Artist
A love of art and music led me to study fine arts. In many ways, the patterns, interconnections and openness of the artistic worldview have influenced my understanding of how living systems work.
The Farmer
My interest in farming started early when I was a boy growing up on a small-holding outside of Durbanville. I planted and tended my own vegetables which I sold to family and friends.
